About This Anchorage
Bahia de Tortugas is the first major anchorage on the Pacific side of Baja California, 390 nautical miles south of San Diego. A small fishing village lines the east shore of this broad bay. Deep anchorage (50–80 ft), diesel by panga, and the famous Enriqueta's restaurant on the beach — the social hub of the Baja Ha-Ha's first stopover.
Highlights
- Baja Ha-Ha first stopover — 150+ boats arrive in late October/November
- Enriqueta's beach restaurant — legendary cold beer and fish tacos
- Fuel by panga delivery — diesel available from fishing fleet
- Deep anchorage with good holding over sand and mud
- Fishing village — lobster boats, manta ray and dorado fishing
- Night sky far from any city — among the darkest skies on the Pacific Coast
Cautions & Notes
- Bay open to NW — uncomfortable in NW swell; not dangerous but lumpy
- No official port of entry — independent boats must have cleared at Ensenada first
- Limited provisions — basics at the Pemex and tiendas, but come stocked from Ensenada
- No fuel dock — diesel delivered by panga, arrange with villagers on arrival
- Cell service unreliable — SSB or satellite comms recommended for southbound cruisers
