What is scope?
Scope is the ratio of the length of anchor rode (chain + rope) to the vertical distance from the bow to the seabed. A 7:1 scope in 30 feet of water means you let out 210 feet of rode. More scope = shallower anchor angle = better holding. Always factor in the change in depth from low to high tide.
