About This Anchorage
One of the best-protected anchorages in Channel Islands National Park, Fry's Harbor sits on the north side of Santa Cruz Island — a sheer-cliffed sea cave at the anchorage entrance, clear water for snorkeling and diving, and reliable protection from NW swell behind a rocky headland. Nearest launch point is Channel Islands Harbor, Ventura, or Santa Barbara (30–40 nm). Part of Channel Islands National Park; no facilities ashore.
Highlights
- Sea cave at the anchorage entrance — dramatic approach through rocky narrows
- Excellent snorkeling and diving — kelp forest, sea lions, Garibaldi
- Channel Islands National Park — one of the most pristine marine environments in California
- Olive trees and eucalyptus from the historic Stanton Ranch ashore
- Eagles, foxes, and Channel Island endemic species on the island
- Stargazing — no light pollution; 30+ miles from the mainland
Cautions & Notes
- N–NW swell can wrap into the anchorage during strong NW weather — monitor forecast
- No facilities — NPS permit required for some overnight activities
- Kelp at the anchorage entrance — approach slowly, watch for kelp in the propeller
- Santa Barbara Channel crossing: 30–40 nm open water — offshore passage planning required
- Strong afternoon westerlies in summer — make departure plans accordingly
- NPS moorings at Prisoner's Harbor nearby — check availability before anchoring
